July 06, 2025

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology today inaugurated the Atin Tunnel in the Wilayat of Salalah, opening it to traffic as part of its ongoing efforts to develop infrastructure and enhance the road network in the Governorate of Dhofar. The total cost of the project amounted to approximately OMR11million.

Eng. Said bin Mohammed Tabook, Director General of the Directorate General of Roads and Land Transport in the Governorate of Dhofar, stated that the project witnessed remarkable progress, with the completion rate reaching around 98%, exceeding the planned schedule by 25%. He noted that the implementation was carried out by a local company, reflecting the high efficiency and capabilities of national companies in this field.

He explained that the project includes a road network exceeding 9 kilometers in total length, featuring a 1.35-kilometer twin-tube tunnel, the expansion of 18th November Street to four lanes in each direction over a stretch of 2.7 kilometers, as well as the construction of bypass roads in four directions totaling 1.3 kilometers, in addition to seven service roads and several entrances and exits to ensure smooth traffic flow.

It is worth noting that the Atin Tunnel Project represents a significant addition to the infrastructure of Salalah, expected to reduce traffic congestion—especially during the Khareef (monsoon) season—enhance road safety, support economic development, and keep pace with the urban and population growth in the Wilayat.
